Metaphor salad

I just told someone, as we were discussing my job search, that I've "got a friend at $COMPANY who's keeping an ear to the ground, but maybe I should ask them to just throw my resume into the pipeline and see if it gets any bites." Apparently I am simultaneously hunting, fishing, and drilling for jobs.

Actually, that's probably a pretty accurate description. But sometimes I do wonder if I should cut back on the metaphors a bit. After all, they say metaphors are a crutch for feeble writers.

...wait, is that it? Or are they bumps in the smooth road of polished prose?

No, wait--a sentence full of metaphor is a gilded lily. That's it.

(Metaphor: the 400-pound gorilla of language.)
