Con report (or: My groove, it has returned)

Awesomest Baycon I've had in years. Possibly, awesomest Baycon ever.

Highlights included winning this year's Zendo tournament, after half a decade of consistently making it to the finals and then being trounced; helping one of the guests of honor playtest and revamp the hell out of a new game; and kicking ass at Just a Minute (and as far as I can tell, entertaining people in the process). I also got in some dancing, some karaoke, some very nice hangout time with folks I don't see enough of, and some very nice...other kinds of hangout time as well.

And I did not get nearly enough sleep last night to make up for the weekend's sleep debt. But I'm not complaining. I think this evening will be spent organizing my con schwag and emailing new acquaintances.

*prrrrr*

Congratulations!

Are there special rules for tournament Zendo, or is any rule allowable? I'm thinking of rules like "A koan has the buddha nature if it has a prime number of points on the table" or "… if it has a unique highest point."

Can you clarify what you mean by "points on the table"?

Thank you for commenting. I've been all too frequently succumbing to the "no one will really care if I post this" mood for a while now, and it's especially hard to tell if people give a crap when I make a post like this that doesn't particularly invite comments.

congrats on the tournament win :)

It's always nice to hear that someone's gotten her groove back.

I keep forgetting about Baycon. Maybe next year I'll remember it. Is it always Memorial Day weekend?

[identity profile] vvvexation.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It is. And I did mention it last week. :-p

[identity profile] zwol.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That would've been Oakland week; I wasn't really reading LJ. And realistically I was in no shape to attend another convention last weekend, despite how very different they are. :-)

... if the IEEE keeps scheduling Oakland the week before Memorial Day, I may have a permanent conflict on my hands. :-(

glad you had a good time dear. and again, you're welcome...

Yes, yes. I've already thanked you at least twice. :-p

Oh, incidentally: I'm starting to not be so keen on being labeled with gendered pronouns when it isn't absolutely necessary.

I played with [livejournal.com profile] zyxwvut a few times at our house or elsewhere, then walked away with my brain ossifying, and haven't been back to Zendo. I think my brain has not the buddha nature."

(By "points" in the above, I was assuming corners of the pyramid .... ish.)

[identity profile] vvvexation.livejournal.com 2011-06-08 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh. That's a concept that doesn't get used in tournament rules -- in fact I've never seen it used at all, but it might be interesting to try it.

ok, you just looked at your friends page/my lj, right? within the last few minutes?

[identity profile] adamchristopher.livejournal.com 2011-06-29 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
i just want to tag that as you, so i can stop feeling sudden panic when i see it come up.

[identity profile] vvvexation.livejournal.com 2011-06-29 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, 'fraid not. I haven't looked at my friends page or your LJ since Monday, or early Tuesday morning at the latest.

To actually answer your question, tournaments pretty much use a certain subset of all possible rules, and a certain difficulty level depending on which round of the tournament you're in. Rules that pertain to parts of pieces, or to things like height that would have to be measured, aren't in that subset.

Now that I think about it, tournament Zendo is a little like tournament Magic in that regard.
