Yes, that did turn out to be it, and no, I didn't know where those things were because they aren't mine and the whole thing wasn't my responsibility anyway. Not that I wouldn't've fixed it if I had known, but I was just as happy to leave it to the landlords, especially when I couldn't figure out on inspection just how the hell one would disassemble the thing in the first place.
