Nasal assault

So, [livejournal.com profile] rose42dance and I looked at an apartment today that was very spiffy--more spacious than any 2-bedroom we've yet encountered--and in a pretty good location as well. Only three problems: 1) no enclosed parking, which in Oakland could be a bad thing not to have; 2) the building's old, hence the electrical outlets are few, are all two-pronged, and I imagine there might be issues with the plumbing as well; and 3) the building, particularly the hallway on the way to this apartment, smells VERY STRONGLY of greasy Asian cooking. It's been several hours, I've had dinner since, and I keep fancying I can still smell it.

I don't think this bodes well for the possibility of living there comfortably.

*resolves to look at yet another batch of places*

Potentially, more unpleasantness

I think the roommates are sufficiently convinced that I'm not to blame for their computer troubles. That's the good news. The bad news is, the bathtub drain has been almost competely stopped for several days now, the toilet has been making ominous gurgling noises--and the washing machine just now overflowed er somethin. While I was using it, mind you. I fear this will be a case of "unhappiness will be directed at me whether or not I can reasonably be blamed, just because I was in the vicinity and because they're still residually unhappy over the last crisis."

And I was just gonna post about how great the previous couple of days were. Feh.

Unpleasantness

Today doesn't seem to be a great day in terms of people being happy with me. My roommates suspect that I somehow managed to break their computer, based on the fact that I was using it right before they discovered their browser had crashed in some weird and apparently unfixable way (a way that also seems to involve spyware having been installed). This despite the fact that all I did was try to use the browser and find that it had already crashed or frozen or whatever the hell it was up to. It might indeed have crashed at that very moment, but I don't see how my using it could have caused that if it wasn't about to happen anyway. But given that they're a hell of a lot less computer-literate than I am (and that's saying something), they still seem dubious.

*grumble grumble*

(by the way, "injury to insult" is the bit that wouldn't fit in the Current Music field)

Fortune follow-up

Ate Chinese again; this time the fortune was WTF-ish in a different way. It read: Happiness always accompanies with you.

And the reason I asked the new-pet question had nothing to do with any future plans of mine, believe me. I asked because I had just arrived home in the dead of night to find myself face to face with a largish dog I'd never seen before. Fortunately it didn't decide I wasn't supposed to be there and start barking or attack me or anything, but damned if I had any idea whether or not it was supposed to be there. It's rather disconcerting, as you may imagine, to encounter strangers of any variety in your house when your roommates are asleep. After contemplating the situation briefly, I concluded the critter was probably either an invited guest or a permanent addition to the household (this would, I realized, explain the appearance of a large dog crate in the kitchen the previous day), but either way I couldn't help but think it a little unorthodox that not one word of this had been mentioned to me beforehand. Only yesterday did I happen to run into the more talkative of my housemates-slash-landlords (the less talkative one I don't think would speak to me without being spoken to unless there was a fire), who let me know that they were boarding the furball through the end of the month, and apologized for not having warned me. I accepted the apology rather offhandedly, as what else could I do? They're nice people and I enjoy living here; I've got no complaints for the most part, but this particular incident did happen to come within just a couple weeks of a similar one that was rather more of a hassle (they didn't think to tell me they'd be re-grouting the bathroom tile, and I woke up late one morning in desperate need of a shower only to find that the shower was off-limits, pretty much for the rest of the day. In fact I almost didn't get to shower the next day either.) So, finding myself in one of those "is this really weird or am I just crazy" moods, I took to LJ for a reality check, which several of you kindly gave me. It's good to know I'm sane.
