Since I wasn't directly affected, and neither was anyone I knew at the time, it doesn't much matter, does it?

We now return to your regularly scheduled not giving a fuck.

Hooray for voicing your indifference. I was irritated by others' expectations of me to observe, remember, or memorialize on their terms - if at all.

Perhaps you are implying that you did not know anyone personally who died from the attack, as is the case for myself and most of those I know (all, to the best of my knowledge actually)...? I was deeply affected by the incidence, though knew no one who died or who was even there. I did know people whose travel was adversely affected.

By "directly affected" I meant "had anything happen to them specifically as a result of the incident, other than having general feelings about the fact that it happened in their country."

An acquaintance of mine -- one whom I didn't much care for -- turned out later to have been in the city at the time, close enough to see the towers fall but not close enough to be within range of debris or anything. I think that was the closest anyone I knew came to being affected at all, except to the extent that everyone in the country was.

[reposting in proper location] My uncle lives in NYC (both now and at the time), observed the event from his financial-district office, and had to walk home to Brooklyn in shoes not meant for walking. But if I remember correctly, I didn't meet you until a couple years later, so. :)

A couple days after the event, I emailed a friend of mine who lived in Brooklyn at the time and said "You okay? I figure you're not the sort of person who'd be in Manhattan by 9 AM, but it's worth checking." He responded "Yeah, it's mostly been a couple days off for me."

That's what I meant by "In bed" ;-)
