At least the weather is cheering me up a little

Today was long and frustrating. I ended up having to skip all of my classes and spend most of the afternoon waiting in lobbies, only to find out that I can't get the forms I need because some people fucked up and some other people are on sabbatical and some other people are more inflexible than I thought.

And then I fell and scraped the palm of my hand, and there are still one or two little bits of grit embedded in the skin. They'll work their way out eventually, right? I honestly can't remember if that's how it usually works; it's been a long time since I've had this particular kind of minor injury.

Yes, they probably will. A hot soak will help. Have yourself a nice bubblebath if it's at all possible.

And please accept my sympathy!

Sympathy I can accept; the bath will have to wait till my roommates aren't asleep. Thanks for the reassurance, though.

...but "grit in the skin", when it is in the form of "road rash" (cyclist term), is a possible cause of septicemia. If I had asphalt mixed in with an abrasion, I'd use a topical anesthetic and then *MERCILESSLY* remove all of the foreign material from the wound[*].

P.S.: * -- Yes, it hurts. But failing that, you should keep a good watch for any pink streaks on the arm, and if you see them, get yourself medical attention imFuckingMediately.

There's this one little piece that seems to be under the skin and just won't come out, is the thing. I'm too chicken to try digging it out with a needle er some such.

The bath will probably help. Or, at least, soak your hand in some hot water, and let it get all pruney. That should loosen things up a bit, especially to the point where you can pry it out easily.

Am I risking infection if I wait till tomorrow on that? I have applied antiseptic already, but soaking would take a lot of time I don't have before bed.

Aww. Doesn't an injury like that remind you of your childhood, falling off your bike on an Indian summer day that seemed neverending?

[identity profile] vvvexation.livejournal.com 2004-03-10 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It does; I remember thinking that at the time. Except for the bike part, 'cause I never rode one.

What can I say, I had a non-outdoorsy childhood.
