Okay, panic!
Apr. 1st, 2006 08:53 pmEarlier this evening (but well after full dark), I was negotiating a poorly-lit freeway interchange when I saw the headlights of a large truck bearing down on me WAY TOO FAST in my rear-view mirror. I wasn't absolutely certain that the driver had lost control or anything--I know that sometimes you just don't realize how fast you need to decelerate, and there was a good chance the truck driver would figure it out and brake in time--but those headlights were unnerving enough that I freaked out a bit. First I accelerated rather desperately; then I realized this was a tricky curve and I needed to not be going that fast, so I braked suddenly and then even more desperately hoped the truck driver hadn't gone ahead and speeded up when I did. Apparently not; the truck didn't hit me, but just to be on the safe side I got the hell out from in front of it as soon as there was more than one lane available. And as it pulled ahead of me in the next lane over, I caught sight of its license plate:
DNT PANC
...If this was supposed to be some kinda lesson from the universe, all I can say is that it was a pretty heavy-handed one--and yet still somehow managed not to be the kind of lesson I'd call convincing.
