Writer's Block: Marital license

Sounds like a good idea in theory, but there'd be huge problems with people accidentally letting theirs lapse. I mean, when your driver's license expires, nothing actually happens until you try to drive again, and once you get the license renewed there's no legal hassles arising from having a "gap in your coverage." Whereas since "married" is a status that affects a lot more of your life, the repercussions of having it lapse for even a short while could get ridiculously complicated. Plus there'd have to be processing fees er something to cover the paperwork, and it doesn't seem fair to make people pay fee after fee just to stay married.
If it weren't for that, though, I'd be all for it. Being in a relationship should be an active choice, not a default state.
