An unusual service?

On the bus home this evening, I rode past Somebodyorother's Microwave Service.  It took me a minute to figure out that this was probably a place that specialized in repairing microwave ovens, though I'd never heard of such a thing.  The first thought that came into my mind, which I knew couldn't be correct, was that this was a place where you brought food and paid to have it microwaved for you.  I can think of no way that could possibly be less trouble than it would be worth, unless you lived right down the block and only occasionally wanted to microwave things.

haha yeah, that's what I thought of right away too.

I could see a seasonal market for specialty microwaving: most people's microwave ovens can't handle a whole turkey. I have a *big* microwave, but even it wouldn't handle a turkey. Maybe a chicken or even a duck, but not a turkey or goose. But most people would only use that once or twice a year.

...leading to fly-by-night microwaving operations like Halloween stores, setting up in abandoned storefronts and leaving detritus of plastic microwave trays and bags of stuffing behind.

This reminds me of the cellwallahs in rural India.

Normally older women who save thier money, get a satelite phone and a bicycle, and roam the countryside as mobile payphones.

cellwallahs

That's really cool.

My first thought was much more mundane... remember the old Bob's Radio Repair shops? There's a sign for one, long since closed, on Fruitvale Ave in Oakland. I interpreted this as an outfit that repairs and adjusts microwave transmission and reception equipment of the type used by telecommunications companies and television signal operators.

Ha!

Either that or some new health craze where Somebodyorother provides micowave services on whichever parts of your body has aches, pains or itches that day. Ok, my idea is even farther out of the realm of reality, but hey - we live in California, the land of the Healthy (Crazes).
