C'est si bizarre

Some random people five feet away from me are conversing in French. This wouldn't be notable except that it's the fourth time in less than a week that I've overheard random people speaking French, and normally this only happens once a month or so at most.

The second time, a few days ago, was the most interesting. There were three people speaking, and as far as I could tell, one of them was speaking fluent French, one was speaking fluent Spanish, and one was alternating between the two...perhaps translating, I couldn't really tell because they were speaking too fast for me to make out. Strange world.

And for the past three weeks, I've found myself irresistably drawn to learning French, and had French dictionaries randomly tossed my direction, when I've had no interest in the language thus far in my life.

I should tell you sometime about the two European international travellers I met in the terminal at SFO. At least eight languages they both spoke fluently and slipped between freely. It hurt my head.

Yow. And I suppose I oughta mention that the other new guy in my life (so much for remaining cryptic) has been providing me lately with an opportunity to brush up on my French, having lived in France for years himself.

Reminds me of when I was doing my sales job. My coworker for the day spoke at least 4 languages. This was a store in Redwood Shores, so very corporate, and these two women stop for a moment and look at our display, conversing in French.

I had her do the whole pitch in French.

In a narrative universe she'd have gotten the sale. Alas, we don't live in a narrative universe...
