Strangely consistent meme
May. 16th, 2004 03:19 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
A fair number of people are doing the meme where they post lines from 20 songs on their playlist and challenge people to identify the titles and artists. I'm not planning on joining this particular flock myself, but I find it oddly noteworthy that every single time I've read someone else's list, I've been able to peg exactly one of the songs on it.
This, of course, is yet another Piece of Randomness from which I don't really have any interesting conclusions to draw. Wish I did, though.

Date: 2004-05-16 04:55 pm (UTC)I followed the sound of a juke box coming from up the levy.
All of a sudden I could hear somebody whistling from right behind me.
It just occurred to me, I must be blind.
Why do I try so hard to keep my cool, when I'm about to loose my mind.
Cecil give me coffee and he won't never take my coin,
I say,"There's thirty dollar in my pocket, whatchoo doin'?"
Every day I sit beside you, on the buss to madison avenue.
You work in the big grey store, with the revolving door.
On a morning from a bogart movie, in a country where they turned back time,
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorry, contemplating a crime.
Like to have the morning paper crossword solved,
Words go up, words go down, forwards, backwards, twisted 'round.
Friday night, it was late, I was walkin' you home, we got down to the gate,
and I was dreaming of the night. Would it turn out right?
And a rock feels no pain.
And an island never cries.
At the tender age of three, I was hooked to a machine, just to keep my mouth from spouting junk.
Musta' took me for a fool, 'cause they chucked me outta' school, cause the teacher knew I had the funk.
Road in on the greyhound, I'll be walkin' out if I go,
I was just passin' through, must be seven months or more.
Even through the darkest days, be it think or thin,
always someone marches brave, here beneath my skin.
He deals the cards to find the answers, the sacred geometry of chance,
The hidden law of a probable outcome, the numbers lead a dance.
I was just a joker in a serious game. I didn't have the heart to play.
But sooner or later, I'd find a reason to throw it away.
Call my name and I'll be gone.
You'll reach out and I won't be there.
Just my luck, you'll realize,
you should spend your life with someone.
You could spend your life with someone.
Another shot of courage in a whiskey glass.
I'm frozen with desire every time you walk past.
Distant admiration just won't get me near.
God knows I've tried so hard to shake the weight of my fear.
A man who's voice sounds reassuring, completely firm and so alluring,
like he's lived a thousand times before, and seen the world from shore to shore.
With a calmness and tranquility that oozes credibility.
With the wisdom and the confidence that seem to scream out common sense.
Have I been blind? Have I been lost inside myself and my own mind?
Hypnotized, mesmerized by what my eyes have seen.
Have I been wrong? Have I been wise to shut my eyes and play along?
Hypnotized, paralyzed by what my eyes have found.
By what my eyes have seen. What they have seen.
Brenda and Eddie were the popular steady and the king and the queen of the prom.
Riding around with the car top down and the radio on.
Nobody looked any finer, or what more of a hit at the Parkway Diner.
We never knew we could want for than that outta' life.
Sure that Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive.
Sometimes I know, we gotta be cruel.. be cruel to be kind.
But when I ask you what you see in me, you say, "Our love is blind."
Our town is just like any other, It's citizens and work and play.
Normal folks, doin' busines in the normal way.
This morning was like any other, mommies kissin' daddies goodbye.
Then the milkman screamed and pointed up at the sky.
There's only one song per band or artist, and every band and artist has had some air time. My tastes are rather diverse, so I thought I should at least try to be fair. Every one of these songs is one that I periodically go out of my way to hear. I've avoided allowing song titles in the part I've included, but aside from that, I've tried to favor lines that I think would be distinctive or easy to recognize.

Date: 2004-05-16 07:33 pm (UTC)That probably just means there aren't very many of us fossils participating in this meme. 8-)
If I saw lyrics from typical popular songs today, I probably couldn't identify them. Which makes me sad, because I can't enjoy as much as Weird Al's recent stuff as much as I'm sure it deserves to be enjoyed.
Do you recognized many of the songs, even with the titles?
