My four-year-old video card has up and died on me. I've got a temporary replacement in place (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] mikz), but am in the market for a slightly spiffier permanent one. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best models and the cheapest places to find them? The old one was a Matrox Millennium G400 G4+, and I figure I might as well just get another of those, but if there's anything out there that's more reliable and/or better for my purposes, while being comparably priced or cheaper, I'd like to hear about it. I don't do any 3D gaming whatsoever these days, but I do play the occasional DVD and I like to run my 21" monitor at a fairly high resolution.

If you're not doing 3D gaming, Matrox is still the best card out there. You can get lots of pretty good for cheap, these days. Stay away from the older Nvidia cards, and you'll be fine with nearly anything, for 2D usage.

But Matrox is the best. :)

If you want an ATI Radeon 7500, I have one sitting on a shelf going to waste. I have no idea how it compares to anything else, though.

I also have no idea. It might be worth a shot, though.

I've got a Matrox G450 which Xfree86 supports in dual headed mode. It's pretty nice. Mind you my idea of a computer game is gcc.

I actually have a spare one that I was using at work I could be persuaded to sell.

How much? Or should we take this to email?

First I'll need to find it and see which one it is.

The one in big4est, my desktop machine, which should be the same has either a part or serial number of G45FMDHA32DB. Once I know which it is, it'll be easier to figure out a fair price. Doing a google search I've seen G450s from $45-$200 plus shipping. Since I bought it a year and a half (or was that two years) ago for about $90, they're probably pretty cheap now.

I really like dual headed. After a certain point, it's the cheapest way to double the number of pixels you have to play with.
