My portable fan is not working. I have another one somewhere, but I have no idea where.

It is going to be a miserably hot night. As if I weren't sleeping badly anyway.

It's cool enough so much of the year that we (or someone) forget that we have a few sizzling days every year. Is it worth AC for those? Some think so, sometimes I do. Last year, [livejournal.com profile] deyo brought home a window air conditioner, and we only have one window it would really work in -- the office. This room's sort of isolated from the air flow in the house, so it would get frigid in the office, and the rest of the house wouldn't get cool enough given the amount of electricity used. (Would be more useful, and perhaps doable, with a fan mounted near the door to circulate the air on out.) But for a few days a year, do I want my main computer room to be a place that I can't see out of? The unit would have blocked my view of the front courtyard completely. So for me, it's not worth it. If I could have an inexpensive AC unit that fit into this house without being intrusive, I'd have one. But as much as the heat just wipes me out for a couple or three weeks out of every year, I'm willing to tolerate it. Were it for even eight weeks every year (as when I lived in Redding: I'd never want to live there without AC, though we mostly did when I was a kid, and I'd lie in front of our little wall unit and read) I'd do something more extreme to deal with it.

Thing is, when you spend two or three weeks being unable to muster up the mental energy to do math homework, you fall behind and have a tough-ass time catching up. Or at least if you're me you do.
