Wow.

The bad news is, apparently folks like the San Jose Mercury News either don't pay attention to the national Do Not Call list or just haven't got an updated copy of same.

The good news is, the words "We're on the Do Not Call list" are like magic. No arguments, no complaints, they just say goodbye and hang up. Makes me wonder if just saying that would work equally well even if it weren't true.

Isn't that wonderful?
Another good thing to say, whether or not you're on the Do Not Call list:

"(Please) Remove me from your call list."

The response will sometimes be another script, but that goes something like "It takes [2 days, 17 weeks, whatever] to remove you from that list, and we have [20] other subdivisions/associates/[idiots who bought your information from us] who may [will] call you during that time." No problem - I just say it every time. After about six or so such calls, they died down considerably. They are legally obligated to comply to that request.

I've noticed that too! They get all apologetic and shit instead of aggro even! It's awesome!

Actually, newspapers and political campaigns are specifically excluded, at least from the last version of the law that I remember reading. So yeah, SJMN will keep calling you.

But now at least I have a surefire way to get rid of them. I'll take that.
