In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial
Who, squatting upon the ground, held his heart in his hands
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter--bitter," he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

Stephen Crane rocks the house. Seriously.

So, yeah, everybody go post a poem of their own. Baaaaa.

A Comparison Between Logs and Dogs

Both are very popular at Christmas,
But it is not generally considered cruel to abandon a log,
And dogs are rarely used as fuel.

*now has Log song stuck in head*

I should've been clearer, though: the meme idea is to post a poem in your own journal, thus spreading the insanity all the farther.

Incidentally, I've added you, because you seem to be very cool. Add me back?

Well, I don't add simply on request, but you're pretty amusing so I will add you on that basis. Deal?

I almost posted that one, but then decided on a different one from Black Riders. You have good taste. :)

Thanks. It was either that, Prufrock (too long, I decided, and too well-known), or "Luke Havergal," which I already posted in a different meme last year.

my favourite black riders poem...

A man feared that he might find an assassin;
Another that he might find a victim.
One was more wise than the other.

Ooh, I'd forgotten that one. It does remind me of one of my favorite Frank Kuppner stanzas, though:

Is someone ahead of him on the path?
The area is notorious for footpads,
And dusk is closing in. He has often wondered
What it must be like to be a footpad. Hmmm.
