Can someone tell me a way to get from Oakland to the Stanford campus that's got fewer steps than AC Transit -> BART -> Muni -> CalTrain -> shuttle?

Amtrak, they run both a bus and a train service from Oakland to San Jose, I believe the station is close to Stanford. It's about $15 one way, though.

Nevermind, I'm an idiot, it's in Palo Alto... Caltrain is how I used to go

Meh. Would be perfect, if I wanted to get there at 9 and not leave until 3.

you can take BART to Milbrae and get on CalTrain there. That cuts out one step.

This doesn't really help, but you can leave out the Muni stage... The one time I took CalTrain, I transferred directly from BART at Millbrae (I'm almost positive it was Millbrae; I know Millbrae has platforms for both, right next to each other.)

or, better yet, good for the whole Bay Area mass transit:]

For certain values of "good." I trust the TripPlanner only for information about transit agencies that I'm already familiar enough with to be able to read between the lines of its sometimes ridiculous directions.

I've had pretty good experience with it, but that may just be because of where I've used it to go.

It's good for sanity-checking when you think you know how to get someplace and want to make sure there isn't a better way. But yeah. To see my favorite TripPlanner bug, try getting directions from Marina Village Parkway in Alameda to 4th and Broadway in Oakland. (The results assume that you can walk on water.)

I don't even trust it to tell me if there's a better way, actually. Like, it'll tell me to take the bus from one BART station to another.

AC Transit, Bart, Dumbarton Express, shuttle. (You can remove the "Bart" step if you want fewer steps, but it'll probably take longer). Also, 511.org

Or actually, I work in San Mateo, and I could potentially give you a ride to the Caltrain station there (from which it's a short ride to Stanford), have you any interest. I usually leave for work between 10:30-noon, so it's not like you would be waiting around forever before your appointment.

That would be good, actually, if it's toward the noon end of that range. Right now it looks like I'd be leaving the house around 11:30 to catch BART to either Caltrain or the Dumbarton Express.

Sure, I'm flexible. As long as it's before July 12, that is (since that's when I go on vacation). Let me know what day, or email me if you'd rather (though that isn't as fun as making plans in LJ comments :-)

Tuesday, 'twould be. About how long does the drive take? I'd have to be at the San Mateo station by 1.

Should be about 40 minutes from your place to the Caltrain station (it would be the Hillsdale station (the closest one to where I'm going) if you need to check the schedule). So I could pick you up around noon, or 12:15, or 12:20, depending how much extra time you want to leave; there usually isn't much traffic at that time, but it couldn't hurt. Anytime's fine with me (no one really cares when I come in :-)

BART to the Dumbarton Express, which leaves from Union City.

That would be my vote.

Also what I would recommend. The Dumbarton Express connects up with the Marguerite shuttles to get you pretty much anywhere on campus, within walking distance. (Some of campus is not directly accessible by car, as I learned after my accident.)

Walk to SF Bay -> swim across Bay -> walk to Stanford campus.

It has fewer steps, but may take longer.
